The DLR Software Engineering Initiative is run by the Sustainable Software Engineering group of the DLR institute for Softwaretechnology. About the Sustainable Software Engineering Group
Our mission matches that of most RSE groups: Improving the quality of software development in research by supporting researchers.
The main aspect of our work is to choose the methodology that leads to appropriate software quality with minimal use of resources. We pursue this goal by applying modern software engineering methods. With the help of the DLR software engineering network and training offerings, we disseminate our knowledge throughout DLR. We expand our expertise in software engineering with our own research contributions on selected topics, like provenance of data and processes, visualization, knowledge management, and software analytics.
Offering suitable support activities is important to us. Therefore, we not only apply them, but also research their success and efficiency. Thus, we are not only working as RSEs but research the work of RSEs as well.
About DLR
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is the national aeronautics and space research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its extensive research and development work in aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security and digitalization is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures.
DLR has approximately 10.000 employees at 20 locations in Germany. Based on a study from 2005, more than 25% of the personnel costs are spent on software development. This aspect shows the importance of software development for DLR.
